The buses and ferries in our municipality should be free. Our society is better if everyone is healthy, educated, and able to get around. Transit is a public good just like libraries, hospitals, and public schools.
Free transit is a way to fight climate change that doesn’t put the burden of action on working people. It would only cost $35 million per year or 3% of the city’s budget to eliminate fares.
Bridge tolls are an unfair tax on people living in Dartmouth. Free transit would help commuters and increase summer tourism to downtown Dartmouth. Let’s get cars off the road and put more money back into the pockets of working people.
